New Year, New Books Day 8 (Part 2): Jen McConnel + Daughter of Chaos

2) Jen McConnel
-author of Daughter of Chaos (March 2014)

This is a really awkward gif, I don't know why I chose it.

Anyways, I really love the premise of Jen's upcoming book! The cover is gorgeous and mysterious too. Witches, huh? It's been a while since I've read a book about witches. Challenge accepted. *winks*

Summary from Goodreads: Witches must choose the path they will follow, and Darlena Agara is no exception. She’s been putting it off long enough, and in her case, ignoring it has not made it go away. In a moment of frustration, Darlena chooses to follow Red Magic, figuring she had outsmarted the powers that be, since there’s no such thing as Red Magic. But alas, Darlena’s wrong (again) and she becomes a newly declared Red Witch.

Her friends are shocked and her parents horrified by the choice Darlena has made. As a Red Witch, she now governs one third of the world’s chaos. She is the walking personification of pandemonium, turmoil, and bedlam, just as the patrons of Red Magic would have it to be.

But Darlena believes there must be more to Red Magic than chaos and destruction, and she sets out on a journey to achieve balance. Only doing so puts her at odds with the dark goddess Hecate, who simply will not allow Darlena to quit. She encourages Darlena to embrace who and what she is and to leave good magic to the good witches. If only Darlena could, life would be simple, and she would not be the Daughter of Chaos.

Guest Post: Top Ten Witchy Movies and TV
I’m a fan of all things witchy and paranormal, and I wanted to share some of my favorite TV and film witches with you today as we gear up for the release of DAUGHTER OF CHAOS.

1. Practical Magic
This will always be one of my favorite films of all time. Witch sisters who are raised by their witchy aunts? Murder and zombie boyfriends? A sweet romance to round it all out? Yes, please. Not to mention my love for both Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. This is one I’ll watch again and again (usually at Halloween, a tradition my best friend and I started back in high school).

2. Hocus Pocus
What’s not to love about this movie? I mean, there’s Bette Midler’s ridiculous fake teeth, Sarah Jessica Parker’s predatory prancing, and the all around silliness of the plot. I love this one!

3.  Witches of East End
This show is one of my guilty pleasures after a long week. Sexy modern witches, people who want them dead, and all kinds of fun magic? Sign me up!

4. Secret Circle
I was crushed when this series only lasted a season. High school witches, drama, and a bunch of adults who want them dead...what’s not to love?

5. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
I love all of the Harry Potter films, but there’s something so wonderful about falling into the world for the first time. Plus, Maggie Smith is AMAZING!

6. Bell, Book, and Candle
This one is a classic. Jimmy Stewart is bewitched by Kim Novak, with disastrous results. There’s also a magical cat and a scene with Jack Lemon on the bongos. If you haven’t seen this one, check it out!

7. Sleepy Hollow
Although the witches are sort of secondary to the storyline, I love this new T.V. series. Ridiculous magic, the coming apocalypse, and a good witch vs. bad witch power struggle makes for fun escapist viewing.

8. Once Upon a Time
Regina (aka the evil queen) has got to be my favorite magical villain...or is it Rumplestilskin who keeps me tuning in? If you haven’t discovered this mashed up fairy tale retelling, start with the first season. I’ll wait for you to catch up.

9. Into the Woods
In my past life (or, in other words, when I was a teenager), I was a huge theater geek, and this musical is one of my favorites. They’re remaking it with Johnny Depp, but the version I adore is the one with Bernadette Peters as the witch. Another fairy tale mash-up, only this time with singing!

10. Bewitched
I wish I could twitch my nose and wreck havoc. I also sort of wish Endora was my mom. This classic T.V. series never loses its charm for me!

There you have it; my favorite witches to watch on TV or the big screen. What are your favorite witchy films?

  2. Daughter of Chaos seems to be a new twist on the classic witch story; not to mention the use of the Greek goddess Hecate, who was considered to be by the ancient Greeks as the one who rules darkness and dark arts.

A fitting story for a fitting lover of magic books!
