Synopsis: At 18 years old, Tyler is on the road to nowhere. With just a guitar and a broken heart to his name, Tyler is about to encounter one of the hardest journeys of his life- even more difficult and heartbreaking that his mother's death. In a house full of the loneliness of Tyler and his distant father, Tyler's discovery of his mother's old journals reveal some secrets he will never be able to forget.
Review: A huge thank you Steven and Jennifer for this copy to review! Oh wow, I have so many good things to say about Songs from the Phenomenal Nothing. It's short, but sweet and empowering.
Characters: Tyler is the main character, the he was such a dynamic and soulful person. In the beginning, his attitude and rebellion bothered me, but throughout the course of the book, I started to see this depth to him and I really felt for him. Tyler harbored a lot of pain in his heart, and as the reader, you just feel like you would do anything to make it go away.
The only character I had a problem with was Chelsea, Tyler's girlfriend. She was very unsupportive of Tyler, and acted like a witch throughout the entire book. In fact, the entire romantic relationship was unnecessary to this book, and the only reason Songs from the Phenomenal Nothing wasn't a 5 star book for me. I just didn't like the romance between Tyler and Chelsea.
Storyline: The entire plot was highly addictive and full of drama. There were so many twists and turns, and I can definitely see this book as a movie or TV show.
Writing: The writing was, in fact, phenomenal. It was lyrical and the thoughts and emotions this book out-poured will be felt by any reader. I believe a good author can make a reader feel the same emotions that the character feels, and this is exactly what happened in this book. When Tyler was surprised, I was surprised right along with him.
Conclusion: Songs from the Phenomenal Nothing is a powerful and heartbreaking novel about discovery and the power of music and love. I highly recommend this book.

ReplyDeleteThis sounds amazing, and I love Leila Sales' writing, so seeing that this would be a recommendation is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI love book that can make you feel the characters emotions:-)
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of this book. You know, even though the romance didn't meet the standard I think we've all become used to in YA books, it sounds like it was realistic. There are many girls who treat their boyfriends like crap. I hope my son finds a sweet girl!

Looks like something I would want to read. I don`t think it is unusual to not like all the characters in a novel you enjoyed . It happens to me sometimes:-)
