Thanks so much to Jayne for having me here today. Since I’ve done a bunch of interviews lately and given plenty of random facts about me and the book, I thought I’d do something different. First, here’s a little about my YA sci-fi book, BURN OUT, which follows a teenage girl’s fight for survival when our sun burns out way ahead of schedule.

My main character, Tora, is very tough and lives on an Earth I can’t even imagine. There were certain items of convenience I wanted her to have throughout the book that just didn’t exist in her world. In the spirit of the holidays, I’d like to present her with 5 gifts that would have made her life more bearable.

1.      Chapstick. While writing about this burned world with its devastating winds, I kept wishing Tora could put on some lip balm. Chapped lips are the worst.

    



   2.      A shower. Everything in her world from toothpaste to shampoo is waterless—water is a scarce commodity—so she’s never had a bath or shower. Few things have the restorative power of a long, hot shower and I wanted her to experience that just once.

   


3.      A hair brush and flat iron. I know this gift is two things but I think of it as a package gift. Tora’s hair is a frizzy, tangled mess throughout the book and I think she’d be amazed at what a flat iron could do.

4.      A real pet. Her only pet in the book is her gun, Trigger, and that’s just sad. I want to give the girl a puppy already.

    5.      A five-course dinner. Or at least some chocolate. Tora has only ever had energy gel packets for sustenance. As a food-lover, I find that entirely unacceptable. If I’m ever stranded on a dying planet, please send me chocolate!
