Title: Burn Out
Author: Kristi Helvig
Shelves: Young Adult, Science Fiction, Dystopia
Publication Date: April 8th, 2014
Publisher: Egmont USA

Summary from Goodreads: A futuristic blend of Beth Revis's Across the Universe and Lenore Appelhans's Level 2, Burn Out will satisfy the growing desire for science fiction with a thrilling story of survival, intrigue, and adventure.

Most people want to save the world; seventeen-year-old Tora Reynolds just wants to get the hell off of it. One of the last survivors in Earth's final years, Tora yearns to escape the wasteland her planet has become after the sun turns "red giant," but discovers her fellow survivors are even deadlier than the hostile environment.

Holed up in an underground shelter, Tora is alone--her brilliant scientist father murdered, her mother and sister burned to death. She dreams of living on a planet with oceans, plants, and animals. Unfortunately, the oceans dried out ages ago, the only plants are giant cacti with deadly spines, and her pet, Trigger, is a gun--one of the bio-energetic weapons her father created for the government before his conscience kicked in.

When family friend, Markus, arrives with mercenaries to take the weapons by force, Tora's fury turns to fear when government ships descend in an attempt to kill them all. She forges an unlikely alliance with Markus and his rag-tag group of raiders, including a smart but quiet soldier named James. Tora must quickly figure out who she can trust, as she must choose between saving herself by giving up the guns or honoring her father's request to save humanity from the most lethal weapons in existence.

5 Presents I Want to Give My Main Character
Thanks so much to Jayne for having me here today. Since I’ve done a bunch of interviews lately and given plenty of random facts about me and the book, I thought I’d do something different. First, here’s a little about my YA sci-fi book, BURN OUT, which follows a teenage girl’s fight for survival when our sun burns out way ahead of schedule.

From Goodreads:
Most people want to save the world; seventeen-year-old Tora Reynolds just wants to get the hell off of it. One of the last survivors in Earth's final years, Tora yearns to escape the wasteland her planet has become after the sun turns "red giant," but discovers her fellow survivors are even deadlier than the hostile environment.

My main character, Tora, is very tough and lives on an Earth I can’t even imagine. There were certain items of convenience I wanted her to have throughout the book that just didn’t exist in her world. In the spirit of the holidays, I’d like to present her with 5 gifts that would have made her life more bearable.
1.      Chapstick. While writing about this burned world with its devastating winds, I kept wishing Tora could put on some lip balm. Chapped lips are the worst.

   2.      A shower. Everything in her world from toothpaste to shampoo is waterless—water is a scarce commodity—so she’s never had a bath or shower. Few things have the restorative power of a long, hot shower and I wanted her to experience that just once.

3.      A hair brush and flat iron. I know this gift is two things but I think of it as a package gift. Tora’s hair is a frizzy, tangled mess throughout the book and I think she’d be amazed at what a flat iron could do.
4.      A real pet. Her only pet in the book is her gun, Trigger, and that’s just sad. I want to give the girl a puppy already.

    5.      A five-course dinner. Or at least some chocolate. Tora has only ever had energy gel packets for sustenance. As a food-lover, I find that entirely unacceptable. If I’m ever stranded on a dying planet, please send me chocolate!

  1. Chocolate! And a real pet! Although, I will admit that I love my guns, too! But my dogs are the real babies! A shower is honestly one of the most refreshing things. After a long day at work, a stressful day. It can even make a great day even greater!

  2. Really the story can't be more dystopian! Despite the knowledge that our sun will turn "red giant" some billion years later from now, i still find myself cringing on the idea!

  3. I really like the cover and would love to read this ! I love dystopian books.

  4. I love when the main character have pet for company! :-)

  5. This book sounds amazing!
And the list was fantastic! I laughed so hard :)
    perfect post

  6. Only gel packs for energy? Bleck. I would want to get off the planet, too. Chocolate all the way!!

  7. Was there a day 13 on your new years log? I can't seem to find it!

  8. This book sounds so good, and the cover is gorgeous! And I love your list, especially the chocolate. Can never go wrong with chocolate!! <3

  9. This book sounds very interesting to try!! I can't wait :D I shall add this to my goodreads also!!

  10. Seriously, Chapstick!!! I would be lost without it. I used to have horrible red rashes when I was a child.

  11. I am so excited to read this book. Anything space related immediately shoots to the top of my list

  12. I love her list! A shower? Chapstick? CHOCOLATE? Heck yes. ;)

  13. That is pretty sad that Tora's only pet is her gun. :( Anyway, I just took a glance at the Goodreads reviews for this book, and wow, Jayne. You are right! It's getting a lot of rave reviews. If I get a chance to read it, I'm definitely going to try it out!

  14. I'm beginning to notice a trend in dystopian books lately... ffffff. Either that or I've just been reading a lot of dystopian books so it's stuck in my mind. Nonetheless, this sounds really interesting! But wow... a world without water? I wonder how anyone survived that long without it since it's so important. Energy gel packets? O:
